… watching those robots go through the same routine they have gone through for a century of days with 0 guests is heart wrenching. Watching the reveal of the scrap pile of “dormant” robots was horrifying. Seeing a guest appear… unrelated to humanity… and prove that galaxial claim not to be in vain was inspiring. … I do wonder though at the final fate of this story’s human population. You make a compelling argument. It reminds me of the Markab from “Babylon 5,” their species was wiped out because of a plague that they tried to keep hidden because of its cultural significance as a “punishment” for immoral behavior. Although the circumstances here aren’t similar, it wouldn’t surprise me if some humans, who were infected by the virus but didn’t show symptoms, would end up on the escape ships and given the lack of proper air circulation on a spaceship, it’s likely those ships ended up a interstellar tombs…
Well I didn’t expect that ending.
