Let’s be real, I really don’t think that was mercy. She probably wanted to get information out of him.
Also, he was a noncombatant at that point due to his crystal breaking and all of his bugs being slain. I don’t see much reason to kill him, and he probably has good info on magic for her or Clevatess to use.
If I had to take a random guess, its most likely because all his magic and power came from the crystal in his chest, without it, he is just another ordinary person for the most part. So if I had to guess it was to get information, possibly use him as a bargaining chip (that won’t work with the new Drel) and to possibly use him in other ways when that inevitably fails.
But Klen did say he wanted to know more about magic, and what better way than to squeeze it out of apparently one of the best?
That bug ability is so scary, granted it is hard countered by any AOE effect.
Also, the regalia killing all of them in like one swoop because they’re ‘made of water’ is really goofy lol.
it is kinda goofy, but the only two you could put together are the insects being mostly made of water, and the regalia she recovered from the mine nicknamed streamsplitter. maybe a third being that she could hear the voices of swords, and in turn maybe use other regalia like they are her own? that would explain why she got tired using some regular sword to cut down bugs, and in contrast she would effortless wipe all the bugs with a regalia. this is just conjecture ofc.
Pretty much every living creature is mostly water, so now that regalia is extremely OP. The original hero shouldn’t have lost with it.
